The release date of the PlayStation 6 is closer than you might think – but Playstation 5 gamers might not be too pleased about that.

Word is coming from Sony that the next-gen console is arriving soon.

However, this – and other nuggets of information – point to the Playstation 5 entering retirement following what appears to be the final third of its lifecycle.

This has, once again, started a conversation about the lifespan of modern gaming consoles.

Despite protests from loyal fans, each generation seems to be shorter than the last.

A recent financial call with the Japanese publisher, Naomi Matsuoka, Sony senior vice president, stated that the Playstation 5 is entering the “latter stage of its life cycle”.

Whether cloud streaming is on the horizon for PS6 is still unclear.

While Sony estimated they’d sell 25 million units during its first fiscal year, sales haven’t reached those targets.

Instead they plateaued at the 21-million mark.

This drop was predicted by Matsuoka as she anticipated market saturation of the Playstation 5.

“As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales,” she said.

“For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year.”

Think the Playstation Portal as well as the console itself.

Expect updates on the Playstation 6 to start arriving soon.

The PS5 Slim was a surprise drop at the back end of 2023, seemingly coming out of nowhere.

But the PlayStation 5 Pro, planned to bridge the gap between the generations, is rumored to be dropping later this year.

A video shared by RedGaming Tech claims some third-party studios have already received development kits for it.

Documents leaked from the United Kingdom’s Competition Markets Authority as part of the ongoing Microsoft-Activision merger investigation.

It suggested the PS6 will either be coming out late 2027 or in 2028, giving the PS5 a rough life cycle of seven years.

Although technical specifications are not yet known, the PlayStation 6 is aiming to be the most powerful console of its generation.

Watch this space, gamers.
